They were screaming to be destroyed. I used my anger to rise against our society´s fear of the power of anger and against its obsession with perfection. Anger is usually silenced and avoided as an ostracised and negative feeling, but it is probably the strongest feeling we have and the one that make us change things. If something, we do our best so those eggs keep falling, making sure we’re not pregnant. For years we make every effort to incorporate our periods into our lives, treating them like a ghost that visits once a month. We try to ignore their presence, their smell, and try to minimize how annoying they are. But then, a day comes when you realize each time you get your period, you’re one step closer to infertility. Then, something clicks and you wonder: ‘How many left?’ Periods are suddenly lived differently when you reach the age considered biologically ‘old’. One day, I decided to pay tribute to this step closer to infertility. Although I’m not grieving the chance of pregnancy, I do want to document this transition into a periodless life that’s getting closer and closer every month and celebrate its significance after years of straight up biological ostracism. https://marcuervo.com/Still-Empty MAR CUERVO 👀️ &nbsp; ABOUT STILL EMPTY ¨Still-Empty¨ is a series of photographs taken during a three-month residency in Iceland that sum up moments of immersion in nature - moments which are equally charged with the landscape’s serene beauty and the high levels of anxiety triggered by my inability to communicate with such wild environments. Having always lived in a state of control nourished by an urban life, I was a sensorial illiterate unable to fully appreciate and interact with the beauty surrounding me. Paradoxically, I responded to the proximity of such overwhelming landscapes and their spaciousness with feelings of anxiety and disconnection that are typically associated with symptoms of Agoraphobia. Anxiety of this sort can be so overwhelming that it inhibits the creation of memories and interrupts the learning process. These photographs, therefore, are also intended to preserve the memories of the state of overwhelming anxiety I encountered and serve as reminders of the coping strategies I learned when facing such high levels of stress during those moments. The reaction of the individual to my images and to the realities they represent is dependent on his or her state of comfort and control as well as the level of disassociation he or she possesses. These images evaluate those levels in the viewer and provide a method to observe how images are lived independently of the reality they’re representing. After a few weeks of researching and meeting people who introduced me to the specificities of the subject, the first thing I discovered was that in Iceland a fish isn’t only just a fish, it means way more than that. Fishing in the island has more efficient and sustainable policies what means that not everything is about quantity but quality; that fact has opened a new horizon of opportunities for women in this field. In the past few years the maximization of the product has become the key: Fish can mean leather, cream and cosmetics, protein capsules… Even though labor keeps on being primarily by women in the processing plants and keeping together the fishermen’s households, due to the maximisation of the product in Iceland they have also managed to diversify their tasks creating a versatile identity of the role women play in the fisheries reaching more managerial and decision making positions. While men were absent in the sea, these women had to take care of everything that happened inland; this is one of the reasons that justify their independent and charismatic character and that’s a universal quality of the role women play in the fishing industry globally. These portraits were mostly taken in Grindavik, Heimaey, Stykkishólmur, Reykjavík and Patreksfjörður. This "mirror study" where observations and comparisons were made with the Galician case (Sereas) has become one chapter in my PhD dissertation.
